Police Arrest Organizers of Planned December 10 Peaceful Protest
The Sierra Leone Police has allegedly arrested the organizers of the planned December 10 peaceful protest after inviting them for a meeting following their letter requesting police presence for the protest
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has denied approval for a planned gathering scheduled for December 10, 2024, citing concerns over public order and national stability.
In a press release issued on December 5, 2024, the SLP disclosed that the gathering was proposed by Mr. Thomas Babadi and Mr. Madi Williams of 37 Mends Street, Freetown, who had submitted a letter dated November 30, 2024, requesting police presence for the event.
According to the SLP, the stated purpose of the gathering was to pressure the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) into releasing detailed polling station results from the June 24, 2023, general elections. However, after discussions with the organizers, the police determined that the planned actions were intended to disrupt public order rather than address electoral concerns lawfully.
“Occupying ECSL offices, as outlined in their letter, is not a lawful way to address electoral concerns. These matters should be resolved through appropriate legal channels, such as the courts,” the statement emphasized.
Additionally, the police noted that the organizers failed to comply with the Public Order Act, which mandates formal notification to the Inspector General of Police for public gatherings. This legal oversight further invalidated the request.
As a result, the SLP has denied authorization for the gathering, and both Mr. Babadi and Mr. Williams are reportedly assisting the police with ongoing investigations.
The SLP cautioned the public against participating in unauthorized activities and urged citizens to carry on with their daily routines. “We urge the public to avoid participating in any unauthorized activities and to continue with their daily routines as usual,” the statement concluded, reaffirming the police’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability.

If the police has already decline the protest approval why arresting the people? This is why people do not seek the approval of the police when they protest because the police themselves they are not doing their job.
