Sierra Leone’s Energy Sector Lead, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, has issued a strong warning to the public regarding fraudulent messages circulating on social media and through phone communications that falsely claim to represent him.
In a statement released on his official channels, Yumkella urged citizens to disregard any messages that appear to come from social media accounts or phone numbers impersonating him. He stressed that those communications are deceitful and do not originate from him.
“I strongly condemn such deceitful actions,” Dr. Yumkella stated. “The public is hereby warned to stay vigilant and avoid engaging with these scammers,” he warns, strongly.
Yumkella reassured the public that his team is actively investigating the matter and is committed to taking appropriate legal action against those involved in the impersonation. “Anyone caught will face the full force of the law,” he added.
The warning follows a specific social media message that purportedly came from Dr. Yumkella. The message reads:
“Hello, how are you?
Sorry, sorry — I’m not always available on this platform because of my busy schedule. You know the job already. I’m constantly engaged, even outside the office, just trying to make sure this country moves forward.”
“Please do me a favor: drop your WhatsApp number and email address. When I’m free, I’ll reach out to you via video call.”
“Also, please be very careful — a lot of people are impersonating me using my name. If anyone doesn’t call you on video, it’s not me.”
“When I’m free, I’ll call you personally on video so you know it’s truly me.”
