The Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs has disclosed at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education weekly press conference that two new districts, Kpanguma and Bandajuma, will be created, with Freetown gaining two administrative councils and the Western Rural three, to enhance effective governance and development in the country.
Minister Tamaba Lamaina further explained the benefits of redistricting under the revised Local Government Act of 2022. He pointed out that while the constitution grants the president the authority to establish new localities and councils, President Bio has initiated a broad stakeholder engagement to foster inclusion.
The government argues that the proposal to increase the number of districts to 18 will pave the way for improved infrastructure, governance, and service delivery. However, this move by the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has been strongly condemned.
In May 2025, the All People’s Congress (APC) released a press statement condemning the creation of new districts, referring to it as politically motivated. The party stated that they will not sit by and allow the government to distort Sierra Leone’s national administrative and electoral systems through illegal and premature actions cloaked as development.
What developments have the existing districts gained under this Cleptocratic and Cacistocratic failed government.?
This is just a gain political favor during election.
We as sierra leoneans will not tolerate this nonsense No more districts needed.

Where were you when the previous APC government took similar move to success? Were you bold enough to say all this crap under the APC management?
You guys got to halt this primitive politics in this country, you’re blindly backing the unwarranted division of a tiny country. Continuing this way, we’re going to have 100 districts in 20 yrs. Tell me, is this move the priority solution to all the myriad problems this country is grappling with. I firmly believe there will come a time when a govt of soberminded people are ushered in in this country, they will slash off all the mess & take this country back to the 12 districts that was representative of the will of the people. We are tired of this APC – SLPP rigmarole in this country. It’s not your personal possession, so you better give due respect to the will of the people.
What a clueless and dumb people we are – Salone ppl. So this is all about APC vs SLPP? Political thieves doing all they can to maintain their grip on power so they can continue to loot the country. Smaller units and efficiency? Ever heard about economies of scale?
Salone ppl, we are dumb and sorry: when it’s up to a President to establish a municipality/locality, when it’s up to a President to decide what type of electoral system to use, when an appointed Minister has control over elected municipal officials. This SLPP vs APC foolishness has to stop…
