Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, addressed participants at the African Women Climate Action Network (AWCAN) held on Tuesday, August 26 2025, in Accra, Ghana.

Aki-Sawyerr, who is a co-curator of AWCAN, an initiative of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Centre for Women and Development, in her address stated that climate conversation is not a trend, but rather a reality that needs to be addressed by naming the issues and offering tangible solutions.

We are in a battle to save our continent,” she stated, “African women are at the forefront of resilience, innovation, and leadership in climate action.” The African Women Climate Action Network brings together women from across the continent who are turning action into impact, advocating, innovating, and driving concrete climate solutions for the African continent.

Climate change has been a growing concern as its negative effects keep increasing in the daily lives of humans.
