Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah of Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 1 has sentenced ten individuals to one month’s imprisonment each and remanded another at the Male Correctional Facility for charges of idleness and disorderly conduct, contrary to Section 7 of the Public Order Act, 1965.
The ruling followed the arrest of the accused at various locations in Freetown, where police prosecutors said they were found loitering and behaving in a disorderly manner, posing a threat to public peace and order.
In their defense, some accused pleaded for leniency, citing unemployment and economic hardship. Magistrate Jah, however, emphasized that such conduct undermines security efforts and must be curtailed, noting that the sentences are intended to serve as a warning to others.
The ten convicts were immediately taken into custody to serve their sentences, while the remanded accused awaits further court proceedings.
