Limkokwing University of Creative Technology has announced the appointment of Professor Alpha Tejan Wurie as its new Chancellor, a move widely regarded as a major boost to the institution’s leadership and academic direction.
In a letter dated 8th August 2025, Dato Gail Phung, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at Limkokwing University, praised Prof. Wurie’s exceptional record in education and human capital development, emphasizing that his leadership will be instrumental in advancing the university’s mission in Sierra Leone.
“Your immense knowledge and experience in education and human capital development will be invaluable in steering the University to play a defining role in shaping the workforce Sierra Leone needs,” Dato Phung wrote. “Your leadership as Chancellor will inspire both faculty and students to make Limkokwing a leading institution in the country.”
Responding to the appointment, Prof. Wurie expressed deep appreciation and a strong sense of duty. “It is with deep appreciation and a profound sense of responsibility that I formally accept this appointment,” he said. “I am truly honored by the confidence reposed in me and look forward to working collaboratively with the University community to uphold and advance its enduring values of integrity, excellence, and service.”
A holder of a PhD in Chemistry, Prof. Wurie brings decades of distinguished public service and academic leadership to his new role. He previously served as Minister of Education from 1996 to 2007 under President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and later as Minister of Health and Sanitation from 2018 to 2023 under President Julius Maada Bio.
His outstanding contributions have earned him several national and professional honors, including the Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone (CORSL) in 2006, an Honorary Fellowship from the Postgraduate School of Physicians and Surgeons in 2021, and a Doctor of Science (DSc) in 2023 for his achievements in Physical Science, Medical Science, and Tertiary Education.
Prof. Wurie’s appointment as Chancellor is seen as a reaffirmation of Limkokwing University’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation, and a recognition of his enduring dedication to national development and education in Sierra Leone.
