Sierra Leone’s First Visually Impaired Lawyer Hails Chief Minister for Transformative Support

Sierra Leone’s first visually impaired lawyer, Amidu Bakarr Sankoh, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, for his remarkable support throughout his academic journey, culminating in his success at the Sierra Leone Bar examinations.

During a courtesy visit to Dr. Sengeh, Amidu said the Chief Minister’s intervention made possible what once seemed impossible. “Many have come before me some even more brilliant but they were not opportune to receive the kind of support I got,” he said.

Amidu shared his aspiration to serve at the Law Officers Department, noting that his motivation stems from a desire to give back to society after receiving significant government support.

In response, Dr. Sengeh immediately contacted the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to facilitate Amidu’s placement. The Attorney General has since invited him for a meeting to discuss the opportunity further.

The Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) also pledged its support, with Financial Secretary Madam Satto Kobbo promising to provide Amidu’s full call-to-the-bar regalia, including a wig donated by the Radical Inclusion Movement (RIM).

Amidu’s journey began when the Chief Minister learned of his challenges as a visually impaired student at the Sierra Leone Law School.

Dr. Sengeh provided financial assistance to purchase study equipment, including a 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro and an Olympus Digital Recorder, later contributing $2,000 toward his educational needs.

Expressing his gratitude, Amidu said, “I vowed to repay the Chief Minister’s kindness by becoming Sierra Leone’s first visually impaired lawyer that moment has now arrived.”
