The Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) has launched a thorough investigation into the alleged misuse of a diplomatic passport following reports of a Turkish national arrested abroad for criminal and drug-related activities while allegedly in possession of the document.

The investigation, directed by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, aims to: Determine how the individual obtained the passport, verify the authenticity of any supporting documents and identify any procedural failures or misconduct involved.

The Government and SLID stated they view the allegations with “utmost seriousness,” emphasizing that “Protecting the integrity of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic privileges and national reputation is a top priority.”

Beyond this specific case, the SLID announced it will also conduct a wider audit into the issuance and use of all diplomatic passports to ensure accountability and prevent future abuse.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to “integrity, transparency, and upholding the nation’s image,” warning that “Any confirmed wrongdoing will attract swift disciplinary and legal action.”
