The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyer, has raised alarm over the presence of six uncollected corpses on the streets of the city, citing a lack of response from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA) regarding which authority should handle the situation.
According to the Mayor, the Freetown City Council (FCC) does not hold the formal mandate for corpse collection. However, due to the urgency of safeguarding public health and preserving human dignity, the council will resume collection efforts immediately.
Mayor Aki-Sawyer made the disclosure through a post on her Facebook page, noting that the continued delay in action puts communities at risk and leaves families without closure.
FCC’s intervention is expected to continue until the appropriate directives are issued by the responsible ministry.
