Demonstrating a firm commitment to public health and effective drug control, the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, Eastern Region, has carried out a large-scale operation to seize and destroy illicit drugs in Kenema.

The operation, conducted in close collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, targeted major drug trafficking hotspots across the city. According to Thomas Ade Williams, Chairman of the Task Force on Drugs in the Eastern Region, the exercise forms part of an ongoing strategy to dismantle illegal drug networks and safeguard communities.

During the raids, joint teams from the Pharmacy Board and the Sierra Leone Police inspected warehouses, market areas, and pharmaceutical outlets, leading to the confiscation of significant quantities of controlled substances, particularly Tramadol. The seized drugs, valued at over 172 million old Leones, were later incinerated at the Tilorma Dumping Site under strict supervision.

The destruction exercise was conducted in the presence of security officers, civil society representatives, and members of the public to ensure transparency and accountability.

“Today’s action clearly demonstrates that the government and the Pharmacy Board have zero tolerance for the illegal trade of drugs in our country,” Mr. Williams stated, reaffirming the Board’s commitment to protecting public health and safety.

Allieu Katta, the Pharmacy Board’s Focal Person, emphasized that the destruction was carried out under controlled conditions to prevent any possibility of reuse or resale. He noted that the Board continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health and other partners to strengthen enforcement measures and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

Mr. Katta further urged citizens to report suspicious drug-related activities and to seek medical care only from licensed health facilities. “This fight goes beyond law enforcement it is about saving lives and protecting our communities,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Pharmacy Board announced plans to expand community outreach and preventive education programs targeting young people and at-risk groups. These initiatives aim to complement enforcement efforts by addressing the root causes of drug abuse.

The operation marks a major milestone in the ongoing fight against illicit drugs. By combining enforcement, education, and community engagement, the Pharmacy Board is setting a strong example of proactive governance in safeguarding the nation’s health and well-being.
