The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has demonstrated rapid and effective emergency action following a fatal accident caused by a fallen tree branch on Blama Road, Kenema City, on 22 January 2026.
The Deputy Director General of NDMA, Mr. Sulaiman B. Sowa, immediately mobilised the Eastern Region Rapid Response Team upon receiving reports of the incident, which claimed the life of Mary Kuyateh, a mother of two, and left three others injured.
NDMA teams quickly secured the area, removed the fallen tree, cleared debris, and reopened the road to prevent further accidents. Addressing residents at the scene, Mr. Sowa urged calm and stressed the importance of reporting hazardous trees and environmental threats through the Agency’s toll-free emergency line 1199.
Speaking alongside the DDG, NDMA Eastern Region Coordinator John S. Goba reaffirmed that the regional team remains on high alert and is working closely with local authorities to identify and mitigate environmental hazards.
Through its swift and coordinated response, NDMA reinforced its commitment to protecting lives, ensuring public safety, and promoting disaster risk reduction in Sierra Leone. The Agency extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
