Superintendent John Songbo Mansaray, the Officer-in-Charge of the Operational Support Division (OSD) for the Kabala Division, died Tuesday afternoon following a road accident.
His death marks the latest in a series of fatal road incidents involving Sierra Leone Police personnel since the start of the year.
Superintendent Mansaray, who previously served as the Operations Officer for the Mile 91 Division, was confirmed dead on the afternoon of January 26, 2026. Police sources described the event as a “painful and tragic loss” for the force and the nation.
A Deadly Month for the Police Force The Superintendent’s death compounds a difficult month for the security sector, which has suffered multiple casualties in road accidents in recent weeks.
On January 21, police confirmed the deaths of three officers following a crash at Mile 91 on January 17. While initial reports had linked the accident to the presidential convoy, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) clarified that the officers were part of a highway patrol team on routine duty, not the convoy itself.
Earlier reports from mid-January indicated another tragedy on the Freetown-Moyamba highway involving a vehicle attached to the OSD, which resulted in the deaths of four officers identified as Spanner, Foday Korama, Mustapha Kamara, and Sergeant Alie.
The string of fatalities extends back to late 2025. In November, two constables were struck and killed by a truck while performing routine duties at Bar Junction in Goderich.
Authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the cause or location of Superintendent Mansaray’s accident.
