The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has expressed concern over what she described as delays by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) in reviewing a recent statement made by President Julius Maada Bio.
Speaking during a recent media engagement, Aki-Sawyerr noted that the Commission had taken an unusually long time to assess remarks delivered by the President in Bonthe District. She contrasted the situation with previous instances, stating that submissions from her party were reviewed within a much shorter timeframe.
“We will write to the PPRC today to urge them to do the right thing regarding President Bio’s statement,” she said.
The Mayor further argued that the interpretation of public statements should be based on how they are received by the audience, rather than the intent behind them. According to her, this principle had previously been emphasised by the Commission itself.
“They told us that a statement is how people receive it, not what you mean. In this case, President Bio’s intended meaning and how the public received the message are completely different,” she added.
Aki-Sawyerr stressed that the All People’s Congress (APC) does not support such statements, noting that the President, as a national leader, should set a positive example.
She also revealed that the party is currently awaiting a response from the Commission on the matter.
In concluding, the Mayor referenced ongoing legal proceedings involving Zainab Sheriff and Lansana Dumbuya, who are reportedly appearing in court over a similar issue.
