Security personnel attached to a joint deployment of the Sierra Leone Police and military forces on Thursday, 14 May 2026, arrested a motorcycle operator at the Wanjama checkpoint in Kenema Division after he was allegedly found in possession of illicit drugs.

The operation, which took place at about 12:30 hours, led to the arrest of the suspect identified as Ansumana Kanneh, a resident of 18 Koromba Lane, Blama Town in Small Bo Chiefdom, Kenema District.

According to security sources, the arrest followed a routine stop-and-search exercise at the checkpoint, during which officers reportedly discovered one hundred tablets of tramadol concealed in the suspect’s possession. Tramadol is a controlled pharmaceutical drug that is widely abused and restricted due to its addictive nature and potential health risks when misused.

Following the discovery, the suspect was immediately taken into custody, while the seized tablets were confiscated and retained as evidence to aid ongoing investigations.

Authorities confirmed that the case has been transferred to the Kenema Police Station, where formal investigations are currently underway. All relevant security and law enforcement institutions have been duly notified.

The interception has been described by security officials as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen checkpoint surveillance and curb the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs across the region.

Security authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks and ensuring public safety nationwide.
