Over 2,000 Sierra Leoneans Employed During ECOWAS Summit Preparations, Says Sengeh
Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has defended the economic impact of Sierra Leone’s hosting of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings, stating that the project created employment opportunities for thousands of citizens during the preparation period.
Speaking at a government press conference held at the Miatta Conference Centre on 21 July 2026, Dr. Sengeh, who served as the National Coordinator for the ECOWAS meetings, said more than 2,000 Sierra Leoneans were engaged during the six-month construction and preparation phase leading up to the regional gathering.
The Chief Minister’s comments came amid public discussions and concerns over the cost and long-term value of the facilities developed for the event, particularly the newly improved infrastructure at Lungi.
According to Dr. Sengeh, the hosting process created opportunities across multiple sectors, with Sierra Leoneans involved in areas including construction, event management, logistics, transportation, hospitality, translation services, and other support roles.
He emphasized that the recruitment process was conducted without political discrimination, noting that employment opportunities were open to citizens regardless of political affiliation, background, or social identity.
“The work was done by Sierra Leoneans,” Dr. Sengeh said, highlighting the role of local expertise in successfully delivering the event.
Beyond the temporary employment generated during preparations, the Chief Minister argued that the investment would provide longer-term benefits by improving Sierra Leone’s ability to host major international conferences and diplomatic engagements.
Government officials have maintained that the ECOWAS meetings represented not only a diplomatic milestone for Sierra Leone but also an opportunity to develop infrastructure and strengthen the country’s position as a destination for regional and international events.
The ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings brought together senior officials and representatives from member states, placing Sierra Leone at the centre of regional discussions on cooperation, economic integration, and development.
These politicians are boot lickers and are very dishonest with their comments. Surely the chief minister can be honest and say that the expenditure incurred for the conference was not value for money. When is SL going to have honest and truth speaking politicians. If the country should be progressive then honest and truthful comments should be expounded from our so called politicians. [Dishonest bunch] I would call them.
