ECOWAS Endorses Sierra Leone’s Candidate for International Court of Justice Seat

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously endorsed Sierra Leone’s nominee, Professor Dr. Charles C. Jalloh, for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The endorsement was announced in the Final Communiqué of the 69th ECOWAS Summit, held in Sierra Leone, where West African leaders expressed their collective support for Professor Jalloh’s candidacy.

Professor Jalloh, who was nominated by the Government of Sierra Leone, is an internationally recognised legal scholar and the Founder and Executive Director of the Centre for International Law and Policy in Africa. He has built a distinguished career in international law and has made significant contributions to the field.

The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The Court is responsible for settling legal disputes between states and providing advisory opinions on questions of international law. Its judges are elected by both the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council.

ECOWAS’ unanimous endorsement is expected to support Sierra Leone’s campaign for Professor Jalloh’s election to the ICJ, as the country seeks regional backing for its nominee to the world’s highest court.
