ll People’s Congress (APC) presidential aspirant and political commentator Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden has made a firm policy commitment to reform the nation’s mobile money identity framework, stating it will be a priority action on her first day in office if elected President.

In a social media post, Blyden declared that “An APC Govt led by Sylvia Olayinka Blyden will ensure integrity of Mobile Money identity systems; done on my 1st Day as President!”. The pledge comes amid escalating public anxiety over rampant mobile money fraud that has left many citizens defrauded of their savings.

While Blyden did not provide specific implementation details, her statement signals intent to strengthen financial security, protect consumers, and restore public trust in digital transactions. The reform pledge aligns with broader government efforts, as the Bank of Sierra Leone has already mandated that all customers update their bank accounts with National Identification Numbers (NIN) by year-end as part of a push to enhance financial system integrity. The National Communications Authority (NatCA) also lists mobile money regulation and NIN-SIM integration among its strategic focus areas.

The announcement follows Blyden’s sharp criticism of Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh over his response to a recent attempted WhatsApp scam targeting Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah. Blyden argued that the incident exposes broader weaknesses in Sierra Leone’s national security framework and questioned why senior officials were publicly discussing measures to address a problem that has persisted for years.
