Sierra Leonean Afropop singer and songwriter Emmerson Amidu Bockarie, widely known simply as Emmerson, is slated to perform at the highly anticipated Kaya Fest on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The music festival will take place at the Markham Fairgrounds in Toronto, Canada.
Emmerson will take the stage alongside a massive lineup that includes reggae royalty Stephen, Damian, Ky-Mani, and Julian Marley, as well as Shabba Ranks and Busta Rhymes.
Presented by Fruit of Life Productions and Wynn Records, the event features a special segment titled “From Kingston to the Origins of Hip Hop to West Africa: The Global Evolution of Sound,” which will highlight Emmerson’s unique musical contributions.
Born in 1980 in Kenema, Sierra Leone, Emmerson originally enrolled in a computer engineering program at Njala University before dropping out to pursue a career in music. Since then, he has become one of Sierra Leone’s most important musical voices. Singing in both Krio and English, Emmerson is celebrated for blending catchy rhythms with sharp social and political commentary. His songs consistently advocate for social change and center heavily on exposing government corruption.
Over his multi-decade career, Emmerson has endured intimidation to silence his critiques, including concert bans, torn promotional posters, and even false accusations of drug trafficking. Unfazed by these challenges, he has released several successful albums, including 2 Fut Arata (2007), Rise (2012), and Survivor (2016).
2025 saw Emmerson fully embrace his evolution into a global Afropop icon under Wynn Records. He traded the localized politics of Borbor Bele for international stages, delivering one of the most significant performances by a Sierra Leonean artist that year. His 2025 momentum was further powered by the cross-continental success of “Strawberries on Ice” featuring Nigerian megastar Davido.
The track remained a staple on playlists throughout the year, boosting Emmerson’s profile across Africa and earning him spots at major international platforms, including the BET Experience, where he represented the Green, White, and Blue.
Emmerson’s upcoming performance at Kaya Fest will bring his deeply resonant storytelling and vibrant Afro-pop sound to a massive international audience, representing West Africa on a stage celebrating the global evolution of music.
