Parliament Building Undergoes Major Upgrades Ahead of 2026 State Opening
The Parliament of Sierra Leone is undergoing major infrastructure improvements ahead of the State Opening of Parliament scheduled for Friday, 7th August 2026. The ongoing upgrade works are focused on improving facilities, strengthening security, and ensuring that the parliamentary complex is fully prepared to host the important constitutional event.
As part of the preparations, a new water storage reservoir is being installed to enhance water supply within the parliamentary premises. A 555 KVA standby generator is also being introduced to provide a dependable alternative power source during parliamentary sittings and official engagements. Other developments include the construction of a new police station to improve security operations, the installation of 10 container offices to provide additional working spaces, and the placement of solar panels to support electricity supply to the parliamentary chamber.
Maintenance work is also being carried out inside the parliamentary chamber to improve its condition ahead of the ceremony. In addition, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) is rehabilitating roads leading to Parliament to ensure smoother access for officials, invited guests, and members of the public attending the event.
The State Opening of Parliament remains one of Sierra Leone’s key constitutional events, providing an opportunity for the President to outline government priorities and officially commence the parliamentary year. The ongoing improvements are expected to enhance the efficiency, security, and overall functionality of Parliament, ensuring that the institution is ready for the upcoming ceremony and future legislative activities.
