The Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) Board has convened an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) for August 6 to seek members’ approval for a caretaker body as the Association works to resolve a leadership impasse following its disrupted Annual General Meeting.
According to the Board, the decision follows the interruption of the Association’s Annual General Meeting on July 31, 2026, when police intervention halted proceedings before constitutional business, including elections, could be completed.
The Board said the Association now faces a governance challenge because its current mandate expires on Aug. 18, 2026. It said the proposed interim arrangement is intended to ensure a lawful transition in line with the SLBA Constitution and the rule of law.
The Board stated that the Extraordinary General Meeting will ask members to approve the establishment of a Caretaker Body to oversee the Association until the Annual General Meeting is reconvened.
According to the Board, the caretaker body would be responsible for safeguarding the Association’s assets, records, and institutional integrity while facilitating the completion of the constitutional governance process. It would also organize the postponed Annual General Meeting and supervise the election and installation of a new Board of Directors.
The Board said the caretaker body’s mandate would automatically end once a new Board is elected.
The Extraordinary General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, at 2 p.m. at the D’Bim D’ Bam Multipurpose Complex in Freetown.
The Board has urged all members of the Sierra Leone Bar Association to attend the meeting to help finalize arrangements for the Association’s leadership transition.
