The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), University of Sierra Leone, has released the admission requirements for prospective students seeking enrolment into its Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing and Higher Diploma in Nursing programmes.
According to the admission guidelines, entry into the BSc (Hons) in Nursing programme is available through multiple pathways, including Year One, Year Two (Direct Entry), and Year Three (Direct Entry), depending on the qualifications and professional experience of applicants.
For Year One (Level 100) admission, applicants must have successfully completed the Pre-BSc Nursing Programme. To qualify for admission into the Pre-BSc programme, candidates must obtain a minimum grade of C5 or better in English Language, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with an aggregate score of 18 or better obtained in not more than two sittings. Applicants with an equivalent qualification or a Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences with at least a Second Class Lower (2.2) are also eligible.
For Direct Entry into Year Two (Level 200), candidates must possess five WASSCE credits in English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, and Physics or Core Science, obtained in not more than two sittings. In addition, applicants must be registered and licensed by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Sierra Leone. Those currently employed are also required to provide evidence of approved study leave from their employer.
Meanwhile, Direct Entry into Year Three (Level 300) is open to candidates who hold a Diploma in Nursing (SRN) together with a Certificate or Diploma in Midwifery (SCM) or any recognised post-basic diploma in Nursing. Applicants under this category must also have at least five years of post-SRN work experience.
The College also outlined the admission requirements for its Higher Diploma in Nursing programme.
Applicants seeking admission into the First Year Higher Diploma in Nursing programme must obtain a minimum grade of C6 or better in English Language, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, Biology, Physics or Integrated Science, and Chemistry at WASSCE or its equivalent, earned in not more than two sittings.
The admission criteria form part of COMAHS’ continued efforts to ensure that prospective nursing students meet the academic and professional standards required to pursue quality nursing education and contribute effectively to Sierra Leone’s healthcare system.
