Heavy rainfall that affected Freetown last night has caused flooding in the Mama Wurie Masjid area of Femi Turner, with floodwaters entering a community learning centre and a local masjid.
Residents said the flooding damaged learning materials and disrupted activities at the centre where children receive lessons. The water also entered the masjid, affecting its use for prayers.
As a result, congregational Salah will not be held at the masjid today due to the impact of the flooding.
Community members said this is not the first time the area has experienced severe flooding, raising concerns over recurring drainage challenges and the need for long-term solutions.
“This is another reminder of the devastating effects of flooding on our communities. Our children’s learning space and our place of worship have both been affected,” a resident said.
Residents are currently assessing damage to books, furniture, and other property, while young people and neighbours have begun clearing mud and debris from the affected areas.
Community leaders and residents are appealing for support from relevant authorities and humanitarian organisations to assist with cleanup efforts, repairs, and improvements to drainage systems in flood-prone communities.
