The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has invited the public to nominate individuals and organizations for its fifth anniversary Peace Recognition Awards, in a letter dated, 3rd August 2026, recognising contributions to peace, reconciliation, and national unity in Sierra Leone.
According to the Commission, the awards will honor achievements made between 1991 and the present, with both living and posthumous nominees eligible for consideration. The initiative forms part of activities marking ICPNC’s fifth anniversary and aims to celebrate those whose efforts have helped strengthen social cohesion across the country.
Executive Secretary of ICPNC, Hawa Sally Samai, said the awards are intended to acknowledge individuals and groups whose dedication to peace has had a lasting impact on Sierra Leone.
“Peace is built through the collective efforts of many people, often working quietly behind the scenes. As we mark five years of the Commission’s existence, we believe it is important to recognize and celebrate those whose commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and national cohesion has made a lasting difference to our nation,” she said.
The Commission said nominations will be accepted from Aug. 3 through Aug. 21, 2026. Submissions may be made by email, WhatsApp, or in person at ICPNC regional offices in Port Loko, Makeni, Bo, Kenema, and Freetown.
Each nomination must include the nominee’s name, the relevant award category, an indication of whether the nominee is living or deceased, and a detailed explanation of the individual’s or institution’s contribution to peace and national cohesion. Supporting evidence is encouraged where available.
ICPNC said this year’s awards cover 18 categories, including the Peace Champion Award, Community Peace Builder Award, Youth Peace Leadership Award, Women for Peace Award, Peace Journalism Award, and the ICPNC Peace Legacy Award. Eligible nominees include individuals and institutions such as traditional leaders, journalists, educators, communities, and digital advocates.
The Peace Recognition Awards are the centerpiece of the Commission’s fifth anniversary observance, held under the theme, “Celebrating Five Years of Building Peace.” ICPNC said the initiative reflects its continued commitment to promoting dialogue, preventing conflict, and fostering national cohesion throughout Sierra Leone.
