Sierra Leone has taken a major step in its digital transformation agenda with the convening of a National Public-Private Sector Dialogue Forum aimed at strengthening the country’s approach to Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
The forum brought together representatives from government institutions, private sector organizations, financial service providers, academia, civil society groups, and development partners to discuss strategies for building trusted and inclusive digital systems that can improve access to services, support innovation, and enhance public service delivery.
The dialogue follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in June 2026 between the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation (MoCTI), Bhutan National Digital Identity (Bhutan NDI), and the SIGN Foundation.
The partnership seeks to support the development of a national digital identity ecosystem based on open-source technology, verifiable credentials, and internationally recognized standards for privacy, security, and data sovereignty.
During the forum, stakeholders explored ways Sierra Leone can establish digital infrastructure that allows citizens to access services more conveniently, enables businesses to operate with greater confidence, and helps government institutions deliver services more efficiently.
Discussions focused on the three key pillars of Digital Public Infrastructure: trusted digital identity, secure and efficient digital payments, and interoperable data exchange.
Officials stressed that the initiative goes beyond technology, noting that strong policies, effective governance frameworks, and reliable technical systems are essential to creating a secure and inclusive digital identity ecosystem.
They said the development of DPI requires collaboration between government, businesses, citizens, and other stakeholders to ensure that digital transformation benefits all segments of society.
The forum represents the beginning of a coordinated national effort to translate the MoU commitments into practical actions, positioning Sierra Leone to strengthen its digital innovation landscape and emerge as a regional leader in digital transformation.
Through the advancement of digital identity and public infrastructure, stakeholders said Sierra Leone is laying the foundation for a future where citizens, businesses, and institutions can benefit from safer, faster, and more accessible digital services.
