Honourable Rachael Mariatu Sesay Pessima, Member of Parliament for Port Loko District under the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), has officially commissioned a brand-new, fully equipped fishing boat fitted with a powerful Yamaha engine, fulfilling a promise she made just three months ago.
The intervention follows concerns raised by local traders over persistent fish supply shortages affecting business activities within the municipality. The commissioning of the boat is expected to boost fish supply, revitalise the Port Loko market, and create new employment opportunities for residents.
The initiative marks a major step in strengthening the local fishing industry while enhancing trade across the municipality. Community members have described the project as timely and impactful, particularly for women engaged in fish trading.
Beyond the fishing sector, Hon. Pessima has undertaken a series of development initiatives to improve livelihoods and empower her constituents.
Under her market empowerment drive, she donated bags of rice and provided financial support to traders in Port Loko Municipality to help expand their businesses.
In the area of vocational skills development, she sponsored over 100 local women to undergo training in various sustainable skills, equipping them for economic independence.
Her support for education includes distributing essential examination materials to pupils preparing for the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
To promote sports development, Hon. Pessima donated 10 million old leones, along with jerseys and complete football kits, to all 12 Region Female Division One teams. She further supported the three district champion teams with an additional 10 million old leones each.
On infrastructure, she facilitated the construction of a key bridge in Tainkatopa Chiefdom, improving mobility and boosting trade within the community.
