Public schools have, over the years, rarely been among the top performers in national examinations, with the recently released National Primary School Examination (NPSE) results again showing pupils from private schools occupying the top five positions.

The top five positions were secured by private schools, with Tower Hill School taking first position with a score of 351. Naiahcom Nursery and Primary School placed second with 349, followed by International School Limited with 348

Romans International Academy came fourth with 347, while Maureeden Preparatory School secured fifth position with 346.

However, the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, said public schools, government and government-assisted schools, continue to perform quite well.

According to the Minister, a detailed analysis of the NPSE results will provide a clearer picture of public schools beyond the headline positions.

He further maintained that, as stated last year, the increasing focus on foundational learning is expected to improve the performance of public schools in examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The Minister said the continued emphasis on strengthening foundational learning is expected to translate into improved academic outcomes for pupils in public schools in the coming years.
