Sierra Leone is rapidly advancing its digital education agenda, launching 278 schools in the last six months and aiming to add 203 more by the end of the year to reach a national total of 751 schools.
Executive Director of Imagine Worldwide, Sugandh Juneja, described the milestone as a reflection of a country moving at the speed its children deserve, emphasising that national priority has shifted toward taking full charge of educational technology, curriculum design, and the country’s long-term academic future.
To ensure the sustainability of these digital learning initiatives across Sierra Leone, the strategy centres on deeply anchoring programs within local communities by engaging chiefs and traditional leaders.
Juneja highlighted that educational initiatives must belong to the people to endure, stressing the necessity of transitioning toward homegrown learning platforms tailored to Sierra Leone’s specific needs rather than relying on external, off-the-shelf solutions.
Future educational platforms are being designed around three core requirements: assessing student performance while supporting learners with disabilities, aligning content directly with the national primary curriculum, and fostering local ownership.
Recent developments reflect this drive for homegrown innovation, including the launch of IPAM Online by the Institute of Public Administration and Management in June 2026, a mobile and web application praised by Deputy Minister Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara as a showcase of national technical talent.
To further democratize access to digital education nationwide, the government has partnered with Agilix Labs to establish an artificial intelligence-driven Future Learning Institute with plans for community learning centres in every district, alongside UNICEF’s ongoing support for the Learning Passport platform. Together, these combined efforts across policy, community engagement, and local technology development are building a self-sufficient digital education ecosystem capable of reaching students in every corner of the country.
