The Commissioner of Labour has dispatched a team led by Ing. Osman Conteh to conduct a preliminary investigation into the incident that occurred yesterday at the Freetown International Airport, with a mandate to establish the cause of the incident and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
The investigation team has commenced engagements with the management of FB Group, the company responsible for construction works at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre, where the incident occurred.
Preliminary findings indicate that two people lost their lives in the incident—one Sierra Leonean and one Senegalese national—while two others survived and are currently receiving medical treatment at Life Care Hospital in Freetown.
As part of its engagement with the affected families, the investigation team visited the family of the deceased Sierra Leonean to extend condolences and assure them of the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that appropriate compensation is provided in accordance with Sierra Leone’s labour laws.
The remains of the Sierra Leonean national are expected to be buried today, while the remains of the Senegalese national will be transported to Senegal for burial.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the team maintaining close contact with the management of FB Group. Dincsoy, the company’s MEP Manager, has assured the investigation team of the company’s full cooperation and commitment to the process, including compliance with applicable compensation laws in Sierra Leone.
The Ministry of Labour is expected to provide further details to the public upon completion of the investigation and publication of its findings and recommendations.
