The Commission for Persons with Disability (CPD) has engaged persons with disabilities in Port Loko District to discuss ways of promoting more inclusive communities through its Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) initiative.
The consultation was held at the Ministry of Social Welfare office in Port Loko on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, providing an opportunity for participants to share challenges they face in their communities based on their personal experiences.
Among the concerns raised were unfavourable treatment within some families, transportation difficulties and discrimination. Participants also highlighted the need for greater community understanding, support and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Osman Tarawali, Chairman of Persons with Disabilities in Maforki Chiefdom, described the consultation as educative, saying it helped him better understand the importance of active participation by persons with disabilities in their communities.
He encouraged his colleagues to acquire skills and engage in productive activities, stressing that disability should not prevent them from contributing meaningfully to society.
Stakeholders said the CBR initiative is designed to encourage persons with disabilities and their communities to identify, discuss and address local challenges through appropriate structures, rather than relying solely on senior government officials to resolve issues from outside the communities.
The consultation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen community participation in addressing barriers faced by persons with disabilities and promoting their inclusion in local development.
