A parliamentary select committee has reviewed the performance of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), with lawmakers examining its revenue contributions, infrastructure improvements and operational capacity.
The committee, led by Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, visited the Authority as part of Parliament’s oversight responsibilities and was briefed by SLPHA Director General Yankuba Askia Bio.
Bio told the delegation that SLPHA transferred a combined US$19 million to the Government of Sierra Leone over the past three years.
According to the figures presented, the Authority contributed US$4 million in 2023, US$7 million in 2024 and US$8 million in 2025.
The Director General also highlighted improvements to berth infrastructure, saying the upgrades have expanded the port’s operating capacity and enabled larger vessels, including Panamax ships, to call at the facility.
During the visit, the parliamentary delegation assessed the Authority’s productivity, achievements and broader contribution to national development.
Members of Parliament commended SLPHA management and staff for the progress presented to them. They also stressed the need for the Authority to communicate its activities and achievements more consistently to enable the public to better understand its contribution to national development.
The visit included a tour of port facilities, followed by an inspection of the proposed Kent and Banana Island Seaport sites.
The engagement forms part of Parliament’s broader oversight of public institutions and comes as SLPHA continues to focus on improving port infrastructure, operational efficiency and revenue generation as key components of its contribution to Sierra Leone’s economy.
