Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr David Moinina Sengeh, has dismissed speculation that he is positioning himself for the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) flagbearership, saying his immediate focus remains on serving President Julius Maada Bio and delivering on the government’s commitments to citizens.
Speaking on AYV’s State of the Nation, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, Dr Sengeh said his motivation is centred on supporting President Bio and helping the SLPP-led government improve the lives of Sierra Leoneans.
“What keeps me going every day is how I can serve President Bio, how we can deliver for the people of this country, and how we can make life better for you and your loved ones in any way whatsoever,” he said.
The Chief Minister said his primary concern at present is the performance of President Bio’s government rather than pursuing personal political ambitions.
“My primary focus at this minute is President Bio, to make sure the SLPP continues to do well and the government delivers for the people,” Dr. Sengeh stated.
His remarks come amid growing political speculation over potential contenders who could emerge in the SLPP’s future flagbearer race.
While his name has featured in discussions about the party’s future leadership, Dr Sengeh sought to draw a distinction between his current responsibilities in government and any potential future political ambition.
He also urged unity within the governing party and among Sierra Leoneans, maintaining that collective action and the principle of radical inclusion are important to achieving the government’s objectives.
“If we work together, if we believe in radical inclusion, and if we put our hands together, we will deliver for President Bio,” he said.
Reaffirming his relationship with the President, Dr Sengeh described Bio as his mentor, leader, friend and father figure.
“Personally, President Bio is my mentor, he’s my leader, he’s my friend, and he’s my father figure,” he said.
For now, the Chief Minister maintains that his priority is to support President Bio, strengthen the SLPP-led government and contribute to the delivery of its programmes, rather than positioning himself in the party’s emerging flagbearer contest.
