Sierra Leonean goalkeeper Mamadou Jalloh delivered a standout performance for Vaasan Palloseura (VPS), saving a first-half penalty as his side opened the Finnish Veikkausliiga championship group with a 1-0 victory over AC Oulu on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old goalkeeper, who is on loan at VPS from Danish club Brøndby, produced a series of important saves to preserve VPS’s narrow advantage and help the club secure three valuable points in its push for European qualification.
Jalloh’s biggest moment came just before halftime when he denied AC Oulu forward Rasmus Karjalainen from the penalty spot after a handball was awarded inside the VPS penalty area.
According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, the Sierra Leone international made six saves during the match, with several requiring high-quality goalkeeping. FotMob subsequently named Jalloh the Player of the Match, awarding him an impressive 9.3 rating.
VPS took the lead in the eighth minute through Kevin Kouassivi-Benissan, who reacted quickly to a loose ball after Oulu failed to clear a low cross from the left.
The early goal ultimately proved decisive as Jalloh and the VPS defence resisted Oulu’s attempts to find an equaliser.
VPS head coach Jussi Nuorela praised the goalkeeper’s contribution, specifically highlighting his penalty save at the end of the first half.
The victory moved VPS to within one point of fourth-placed Gnistan in the championship group standings, with Nuorela stressing the importance of the three points as the club continues its pursuit of European qualification.
Jalloh has established himself as an important part of the VPS team this season, featuring in 21 league matches and keeping six clean sheets. He currently holds a 6.89 average rating on FotMob.
The young goalkeeper remains under contract with Brøndby until the summer of 2028 and is expected to return to the Danish club when his loan spell with VPS concludes at the end of 2026.
His latest performance adds to an encouraging season for the Sierra Leonean goalkeeper as he continues to gain valuable first-team experience in Finland.
