Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has engaged more than 250 Sierra Leoneans living in Guinea on migration, consular protection, employment, trade and cross-border cooperation during a civic town hall held on September 9, 2026, at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Conakry.
The engagement, moderated by Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah and hosted by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Guinea, Foday Yumkella, formed part of the Government’s high-level working visit to Guinea. It also allowed the delegation to brief Sierra Leoneans on the outcomes of discussions with Guinean authorities.
Jalloh expressed Sierra Leone’s condolences to Guinea following the August 23 Dar es Salam landfill collapse, which claimed 36 lives, including 17 Sierra Leonean nationals. He commended Guinean authorities for their response and support to affected Sierra Leoneans.
The Vice President outlined bilateral agreements covering residence and employment documentation, consular registration and protection, cross-border trade, immigration and border cooperation, and safer overseas employment travel. The two countries also agreed on the introduction of consular and trader cards, as well as follow-up mechanisms to address migration, strengthen border security and deepen trade and economic cooperation.
Migration concerns also featured prominently, particularly the movement of Sierra Leoneans through airports for overseas employment. Government officials said measures being developed are intended to protect citizens from trafficking, smuggling, exploitation, unsafe recruitment and mass deportations, while stressing that the objective is to facilitate safer and lawful travel.
During an interactive session, community members raised concerns directly with the delegation. The Sierra Leone Union in Guinea presented Vice President Jalloh with an honorary membership card, which he accepted while encouraging Sierra Leoneans to remain law-abiding and peaceful members of their host communities.
The delegation included Ministers Morie Lengor, Umaru Napoleon Koroma and Chernor Bah, Deputy Foreign Minister Jeneba Bangura, and Ambassador Foday Yumkella.
The visit also focused on strengthening trade and economic ties, with Sierra Leone and Guinea exploring measures to facilitate cross-border commerce, attract investment and promote industrialisation, including consideration of a joint commercial fair or exhibition.
