Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr David Sengeh, has disclosed that he does not personally know his monthly salary, stating that his financial account has been managed by another person since he was 19 years old.
Speaking on Radio Democracy 98.1 FM, Sengeh stated that he does not have access to the account in which his salary is paid.
Sengeh made this disclosure due to online debate after he told Umaru Fofonah on a live Television show that he does not know how much he is paid.
According to him, the current account where his salary is paid was created on his behalf at age 19 while studying at Harvard University.
“An account was opened for me while I was studying at Harvard University, despite my school fees already being paid, and that account was subsequently managed by another person,” Sengeh said.
He added that the same arrangement continued after he was appointed Chief Minister, the most senior government position after the President.
“I don’t personally manage the account into which my earnings are paid,” he told listeners.
He described continued questions about his pay as “kongosa business” — a Krio term for gossip — while maintaining that he genuinely does not know the figure.
