The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has directed flagbearer aspirant Musa Tarawally to immediately stop using the party’s logo, presenting himself as an SLPP member or identifying himself as an aspirant for the party’s flagbearership, after the Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) confirmed that he remains a member.
The directive is contained in a September 17, 2026 letter from SLPP National Chairman Jimmy Batilo Songa addressed to Tarawally and copied to senior party officials and leaders of several political parties.
According to the letter, the SLPP contacted the CDP to verify Tarawally’s membership status. The CDP National Secretary General reportedly responded on September 3, confirming that Tarawally remains a member of the party.
The SLPP said the confirmation was particularly relevant because Tarawally contested the 2018 presidential election as the CDP’s candidate. Independent election records also identify him as the CDP presidential candidate in that election.
Citing Article 6(3a) of the SLPP Constitution, which the letter says gives the National Chairman administrative oversight of the party, Songa directed Tarawally to cease any representation, communication, publication or activity that could suggest he is acting on behalf of, or as a member or aspirant of, the SLPP.
The letter also stated that the SLPP would issue a separate public statement to inform party members and the wider public of Tarawally’s status and advise them on any dealings with him in the name of the party.
Tarawally has publicly presented himself as an SLPP flagbearer aspirant ahead of the 2028 presidential election, with his political activities and public statements in recent months identifying him with the party.
The September 17 directive now places that public association against the CDP’s stated position, as cited by the SLPP, that Tarawally remains a member of the former party.
