Traffic Police Crack Down on Vehicles with Unauthorized Lights in Freetown
Sahid Bangura The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), through its Traffic Management and Road Safety Department, has launched an operation to remove unauthorised artificial and decorative lights from vehicles operating in central Freetown.
The operation, launched on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, is aimed at improving road safety, enforcing traffic regulations and reducing risks associated with the improper use of vehicle lighting.
During the exercise, Traffic Police officers are targeting vehicles fitted with artificial or decorative lights that are not authorised for use on public roads.
According to the police, such lights can distract other road users, impair drivers’ vision and create hazardous conditions, potentially increasing the risk of road traffic accidents.
The SLP has urged motorists to comply with existing traffic regulations and desist from installing unauthorised lighting devices on their vehicles.
The police have also called on all road users to prioritise safety, exercise caution and cooperate with Traffic Police personnel as the enforcement operation continues.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Traffic Management and Road Safety Department to promote safer roads and ensure compliance with road traffic regulations in Freetown.
