Central University Hosts European Delegation Over Proposed Waste Management Master’s Programme
Alusine Ahmed Kargbo Central University has hosted a delegation of European university representatives in a strategic engagement aimed at advancing collaboration on a proposed Master’s programme in Waste Management and Circular Economy.
The visit, held at the university’s main campus at 1 Silicone Hills in Mile 91, brought together senior university officials and the visiting academics to explore areas of partnership focused on curriculum development, academic exchange, and innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
Speaking during the engagement, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of Central University, Professor Bob Karankay Conteh, described the visit as an important milestone in the institution’s efforts to expand its academic offerings and contribute meaningfully to national development priorities.
Professor Conteh noted that although Central University is a relatively young institution, it has already secured accreditation from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and continues to strengthen its capacity in delivering quality higher education. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to building strong international partnerships that enhance teaching, research, and practical learning outcomes for students.
He further emphasized that the university welcomed the delegation’s involvement in the waste management initiative, encouraging open engagement with staff and students to better understand the institution’s academic environment, facilities, and ongoing development agenda.
The Chancellor of Central University, Dr. Muckson Sesay, also addressed the delegation, expressing appreciation for the partnership and highlighting the university’s broader mission of responding to national skills needs through education and innovation. He noted that the establishment of the university was driven by the growing demand for accessible and relevant higher education in Sierra Leone.
Dr. Sesay reflected on his international academic experiences, stating that they reinforced his belief in the importance of investing in science, technology, and practical education systems that can address real-world challenges. He described the proposed Waste Management and Circular Economy programme as aligned with the university’s vision of contributing to sustainable national development through knowledge creation and applied research.
Following the discussions, the visiting delegation toured the campus, inspecting academic facilities and other infrastructure as part of their assessment of the university’s readiness for deeper collaboration.
The engagement is expected to pave the way for strengthened academic cooperation between Central University and its European partners, particularly in advancing environmentally focused education and research in Sierra Leone.
