The Sierra Leone Navy has completed a specialised training exercise aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to combat illegal fishing, human trafficking and other maritime crimes in its territorial waters.

The training, supported by the European Union through the Portuguese Navy, focused on strengthening the operational capabilities of Sierra Leonean naval personnel in key areas of maritime security.

Participants received training in maritime surveillance, boarding operations, evidence handling, as well as the operation and maintenance of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs).

The initiative was supported through the EU-funded Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) project, implemented by Instituto Camões. The project provides specialised training and essential equipment to maritime security institutions in Sierra Leone and other Gulf of Guinea countries.

SWAIMS is aimed at strengthening regional maritime security and contributing to stability, peace and sustainable economic growth across the ECOWAS region.

The conclusion of the training was marked by a reception hosted on Monday by EU Ambassador to Sierra Leone Jacek Jankowski. The event brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, security partners and representatives of the Portuguese Navy.

Among those in attendance were Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Jeneba Bangura, Minister of Internal Affairs Morie Lengor, and Lieutenant Commander Nelson Santos Martins, Commanding Officer of the visiting Portuguese naval frigate NRP Álvares Cabral.

Officials at the event underscored the importance of maritime security to Sierra Leone’s national security and economic development, particularly in addressing illicit activities within the country’s territorial waters.

They also stressed the importance of continued regional and international cooperation, built on mutual trust and transparency, to strengthen maritime security and protect the economic interests of Sierra Leone and the wider West African region.
