Sierra Leone Moves to Transform National Youth Service Into Employment Platform
Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Youth Affairs is advancing plans to reshape the National Youth Service into a broader platform linking national service with skills development and employment.
The ministry announced the planned transformation on October 6, 2026, saying the initiative is intended to strengthen and decentralise the National Youth Service (NYS) while expanding opportunities for young people across the country.
According to the ministry, the proposed direction will place greater emphasis on youth development, national service, skills building and access to employment.
The initiative is being framed around the transition “From National Service to National Employment,” reflecting the ministry’s stated goal of connecting young people’s service to practical opportunities in the labour market.
The ministry said the future of Sierra Leone depends heavily on its young population and emphasised the need to equip young people with skills, opportunities and experience that can prepare them for employment and leadership.
The proposed changes are expected to position the NYS as a stronger national mechanism for youth empowerment while extending its reach beyond existing service arrangements.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs said the broader objective is to help develop young people who are prepared to contribute to national development, secure employment and take on leadership responsibilities.
The ministry’s communication was issued through the NYS Communication Units on October 6, 2026.
