A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Cline Town, Freetown, after a shipping container caught fire, according to eyewitnesses.

The incident sent thick black smoke into the air and caused concern among workers and other people in the port area.

Eyewitnesses said port workers and staff rushed toward the scene as efforts were made to contain the blaze.

The fire was later extinguished, according to the information provided, and no deaths were reported.

The Queen Elizabeth II Quay, commonly known as Water Quay, is located in Cline Town, Freetown, and serves as the country’s main seaport and a major gateway for Sierra Leone’s international trade.

The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority identifies the facility as a key entry and exit point for cargo and an important contributor to the country’s economic activity.

Authorities are investigating the incident to establish what caused the fire.
