President Bio Launches Sierra Leone Shipping Company to Boost Maritime Trade
President Julius Maada Bio on Monday, October 19, 2026, officially launched the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company Limited (SLOIC), marking a new development in the country’s maritime sector.
The launch ceremony, held at the NSBT Terminal at Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown, was attended by President Bio and First Lady Dr Fatima Maada Bio.
The establishment of SLOIC is expected to strengthen Sierra Leone’s participation in international shipping by providing the country with a greater role in transporting goods traded with other nations.

Speaking after the launch, President Bio described the occasion as a significant moment for Sierra Leone, noting that the country had long relied on international shipping companies to transport its imports and exports.
He said the establishment of the company represented a step towards increasing Sierra Leone’s involvement in the movement of goods across international markets.

The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of the country’s maritime industry and support efforts to expand its role in international trade.
The launch of SLOIC marks a new chapter in Sierra Leone’s shipping sector as the country seeks to strengthen its maritime capacity and increase its participation in global commercial activities.
