The Ministry of Health, through the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), has reviewed Sierra Leone’s preparedness for a potential Ebola outbreak, highlighting the need for urgent action to address critical gaps and strengthen the country’s emergency response capacity.

The review, held at the NPHA headquarters in Wilberforce, focused on ensuring that the country’s public health systems are equipped to respond swiftly and effectively to a potential Ebola threat.

Key areas discussed included emergency coordination, hospital isolation capacity, infection prevention and control (IPC), ambulance services, personal protective equipment (PPE), safe burial arrangements, contact tracing and community engagement. Participants stressed the need to strengthen coordination among relevant institutions and ensure that essential response systems are functional and ready for activation.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of activating the incident management structure through the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), assessing hospital readiness, strengthening response teams and addressing outstanding preparedness gaps. Participants further emphasised the need to engage paramount chiefs, community leaders and other local stakeholders to promote public awareness, encourage community participation and support an effective outbreak response.

Although no confirmed Ebola cases had been reported in Sierra Leone at the time of the meeting, the review underscored the importance of preparedness, vigilance and early action in protecting lives and safeguarding public health.

The Ministry of Health, through the NPHA, called on all relevant stakeholders to work together urgently to address identified gaps, ensure adequate supplies and strengthen operational readiness. Sustained coordination, community engagement and investment in emergency response capacity were identified as critical to ensuring the country’s readiness for potential public health threats and protecting the health and well-being of all Sierra Leoneans.
