Judgment Day on PR System
The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone will today, Friday 27 January 2022 deliver judgment in the suit against using the Proportional Represntation (PR) system in the 2023 multi-tiers elections.
The suit was brought by the main opposition, All People’s Congress (APC) challenging the legality of using the PR System in the upcoming general elections.
Opposition lawyers argued that President Bio’s directive to the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) to use the PR system for parliamentary elections in the 2023 elections is unlawful, since there were existing constituencies at the time the directive was given and that the Commission had provided no compelling and clear explanation for resorting to the PR system.
State Counsels however argued that the President acted within the powers conferred on him by the Constitution, stating that the President’s power to issue such directives cannot be questioned in a court of law.
Judgment for the above matter is set to take place today at 10 am prompt at court No.1 in the Law Court building at Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown. The Matter is been presided over by the Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, Desmomd Babatunde Edwards.
