Former President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, has paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, at the Commission’s new headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
Dr. Touray warmly welcomed the former Sierra Leonean leader, with both men holding cordial discussions focused on regional cooperation, peace, and democratic governance in West Africa.
The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Koroma and ECOWAS, reflecting their shared commitment to promoting regional integration and strengthening collaboration among member states.
Koroma’s visit to the ECOWAS Commission comes after he attended the ECOWAS Mid-Term Summit held in Lungi, Sierra Leone. His participation in the regional meeting followed the Sierra Leone Government’s decision to discontinue charges relating to his alleged involvement in the failed coup attempt of November 2023.
With the legal proceedings now discontinued, the former President is expected to return home to Sierra Leone as a free man after spending several months outside the country.
The engagement also underscored the enduring partnership between Sierra Leone and ECOWAS, while highlighting the continued role of former heads of state in advancing regional dialogue, peacebuilding, and democratic governance across West Africa.
