The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education says it is engaging the Government Printing Department to begin producing university degree certificates locally in Sierra Leone as part of efforts to reduce delays faced by graduates.
Minister Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie said the initiative is aimed at improving the speed of certificate issuance after graduation, a process she noted can take months in some cases.
She explained that the Government Printing Department has recently been modernised through a partnership with a Chinese company, which has strengthened its printing capacity and improved security features for official documents.
Dr. Wurie said delays in issuing certificates have created difficulties for graduates, particularly when applying for jobs or scholarships that require immediate proof of qualification.
She also raised concerns about document security, stressing that any system for local printing must include strong safeguards to prevent forgery and protect the credibility of academic certificates.
According to her, discussions are ongoing with university authorities and the Government Printing Department to ensure both efficiency and security in the proposed system.
The Minister added that the long-term goal is to have most degree certificates printed locally in Sierra Leone, reducing delays and improving service delivery for graduates.
