Acclaimed British-Sierra Leonean actor Idris Elba has revealed plans to eventually step away from acting and focus primarily on directing.
Speaking during an “In Conversation” session at the Red Sea International Film Festival, the 53-year-old actor said he intends to transition to directing full-time, although the move will be gradual.
“I’m hoping that my fanbase as an actor isn’t mad at me,” Elba said during the Q&A. “Eventually, I want to transition to being a director fully. I’ve been acting for a long time. I love it still, but directing allows me to flex slightly different muscles and just be a part of the set in a different way. I really enjoy it.”
Elba has built an international acting career through acclaimed roles, including Stringer Bell in The Wire, DCI John Luther in Luther, Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Despite his plans to focus on directing, Elba remains attached to several upcoming acting projects. These include roles in Amazon’s Masters of the Universe and Paramount’s Children of Blood and Bone, as well as an upcoming Luther sequel feature.
His comments suggest that while he plans to eventually leave acting behind, audiences will continue to see him on screen as he completes his existing commitments.
