Mental Health: Dr Jalloh Warns Against Overlooking Anxiety and Phobias

Dr Abdul Jalloh, Director of Mental Health and Non-Communicable Diseases at Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health, has said mental health conditions are not limited to severe cases, noting that common conditions such as anxiety and phobias can also affect people.

Speaking during an interview with Ecko Media on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, Jalloh explained that some people experience mental health conditions without recognising them.

He cited fears of dogs, flying, spiders and public speaking as examples, explaining that such fears may become a concern when they interfere with a person’s daily activities and functioning.

Jalloh noted that occasional worry does not necessarily indicate a mental health condition. However, persistent fear and panic that disrupt everyday life may require attention.

He explained that treatment depends on the specific condition and stressed that not every mental health condition requires medication. Some conditions can be managed through psychotherapy, including exposure-based techniques.

Jalloh also identified poverty, unemployment and substance abuse as factors that can increase a person’s risk of developing mental health conditions.

He emphasised that mental health encompasses a wide range of conditions, including anxiety and phobias, rather than only severe cases that are more visible to the public.
