Amilia Williams, a 50 years old woman, was remanded at the Main Correctional Facility of Pademba Road in Freetown on Tuesday, 4th of July 2023, following the allegation that she defrauded Jestina Kutubu, an employee of the Immigration Office.

Williams is alleged to have fraudulently obtained Le 40 million old Leones from Kutubu on the pretext that she would facilitate Kutubu’s relatives travelling to Australia which turned out to be fake. She is facing charges of conspiracy to defraud, causing money to be paid, larceny and fifteen other related charges.

The information before the Court showed that the accused, Amilia Williams, between the 1st of December 2022 and the 31st of March 2023, at Victoria Park in Freetown, conspired with intent together with another person – unknown to defraud Jestina Kutubu the sum of forty million old Leones by falsely pretending that they will facilitate a trip for her relatives, Alice Wango Kutubu, Jestina Bangura, Elizabeth Kamara and Ramatu Turay to Australia for job opportunity knowing same to be false.

The police report in court further stated that the accused, on the said date at the Immigration office at Gloucester Street in Freetown, with intent to defraud, obtained chattel, to wit the Republic of Sierra Leone Passport number ER183345, from Jestina Kutubu bearing the name of Amara Thoronka, Moyatu Jusu. Khadijah Binti Kamara, Yealie Stalled Sesay, Mohamed Lansana Ramatu Turay, and Mohamed Bangura falsely pretend that she will facilitate a trip to Australia and America, for they know the same to be false.

The accused was not allowed to take a plea after the charges were read and explained to her because it was a felonious offence. Witnesses are yet to testify against Williams. Meanwhile, Lawyer Jimmy Smith Esq tried in vain to secure bail for his client.

Magistrate Ngegba remanded the accused, and adjourned the matter to the 12th of July, 2023. ASP Ibrahim S. Mansaray is prosecuting the matter
