The Angel Care Foundation is set to launch its newborn blanket initiative in Freetown on October 22, 2026, to support early infant care and promote maternal health education in Sierra Leone.

The launch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the New Brookfields Hotel and is expected to bring together government institutions, healthcare providers, diplomatic missions, businesses and development partners to explore opportunities for local collaboration, according to information released by the foundation.

The Angel Blanket Initiative aims to distribute one million blankets to newborns across Africa over five years. The programme combines the distribution of cotton blankets with educational materials designed to help families understand newborn care, recognize danger signs and improve postnatal care for mothers.

Founded in 2020 by Dr. Olivia Tchanque, the US-based Angel Care Foundation works in community health, water and sanitation, education and humanitarian assistance.

Sierra Leone will be the second country to host the initiative, following its launch in Accra, Ghana, on June 25, 2026, according to the foundation.

Under the programme, mothers and their newborns will receive 100 per cent cotton blankets upon discharge from participating health facilities. The initiative also seeks to equip families with practical information on newborn care and how to identify potential health complications after birth.

Organizers say the Freetown launch will provide an opportunity to establish partnerships supporting blanket distribution, health education and community outreach. However, specific distribution targets for Sierra Leone and the health facilities expected to participate have yet to be confirmed.

The foundation is inviting organizations to support the initiative through funding, healthcare partnerships, logistics, supplies, communications and institutional cooperation.

The programme operates under the theme, “One Blanket. One Baby. One Message of Unity.”

Through the initiative, the foundation aims to expand its reach across Africa by combining newborn supplies with health education to promote maternal and infant well-being. Further details on implementation in Sierra Leone are expected to be determined in consultation with local partners.
