The Spokesperson of the Sierra Leone Lawyers’ Society, Claude Bahmee Davies accused the Secretary to the President, Dr Emmanuel Gaima of threatening the Kenya Law Society President, Faith Odhiambo of her insecurity and safety in honoring the Sierra Leone Lawyers’ Society first Annual General Meeting and Conference.

The meeting was held at the T-Hall, Big Water, Peninsular, on February 20-21, 2025, under the theme: “The Role of Lawyers in Democratic Governance.” The two-day event was held purposely to discuss the crucial role of lawyers in upholding democracy, justice, and the rule of law in Sierra Leone, and its brought together legal professionals, civil society representatives, and public officials.

PRO Claude vehemently opposed, “On Monday, we received information from Faith Odhiambo, our proposed Keynote Speaker for the AGM saying that the Sierra Leone Ambassador to Kenya approached her and said, in reference to the Secretary to the President, the Sierra Leone Government does not permit her to travel from Kenya to attend the Sierra Leone Lawyers’ Society AGM Meeting.”

He further alleged that Faith Odhiambo was strictly warned not to attend the meeting, threatening that if she does, her safety and security would not be guaranteed. He reiterated, “if she insists to attend the AGM, her safety and security would not be guaranteed. That was exactly how we were informed by Faith Odhiambo.”

Claude further asserted that, the Sierra Leone Lawyers’ Society President, Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah, after receiving the information from the Kenya Lawyers’ Society President, encouraged her to attend the AGM. According to the PRO, she replied, “being that the meeting is a body of lawyers converging, she noted that it is only the Attorney General, who happens to be the head of the society can assure her of her safety.”

The PRO affirmed that they made efforts to connect the Attorney General, and Faith Odhiambo. Upon their conversations vai phone call, the PRO stated that Faith later reached out to him confirming that she has had a phone conversation with the Attorney General, and that he urged her to attend the meeting, assuring that the AGM is not politically affiliated.

However, Claude stated that, Faith Odhiambo being a lawyer, requested the Attorney General to offer her a written document that would clearly state the assurance of her safety, which the Attorney General refused to do, so, he said it was base on that backdrop Faith Odhiambo refused to attend to the AGM.

The PRO also claimed that, with the exception of the City Mayor, the government refused to honor their invitation to the AGM.
